What is organic agriculture?

Organic food is food grown without the use of pesticides artificial fertilizers or sewage sludge, and without the use of genetically modified organisms or any other chemical products. Organic farms are more sustainable and environmentally sound.

We are proud to say that all of our products (our prize-winning, extra-virgin olive oil, our honey, fruits and vegetables) are certified organic.

Why organic?

Organic produce is not covered in a cocktail of poisonous chemicals and contains on average 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micro-nutrients than intensively farmed produce.

Organic farms support and nurture our beautiful and diverse wildlife.

Organic farms use less energy and produce less waste.

Organic produce simply tastes so much better; fruit and vegetables full of juice and flavour - remember those?

Lucia and Sandro are strongly committed to respecting the environment and that Green Ethic infuses everything at Fontanaro and Tartagli:

Fertilizer: They actively compost and recycle all organic materials for fertilizer, without using any chemicals.

Irrigation: As rainwater collects on the roofs of their buildings, a series of pipes and gutters sends the water to large holding tanks. This recycled water is then used as needed in the dry season.

Electricity: A substantial portion of their energy needs are generated using solar cell technology .Fontanaro was one of the first in Umbria to make use of this technology.

Heating: Solar panels heat water (in summer) for all domestic purposes.
BTUs (in winter) are maximized with a wood burning furnace. The gas boiler serves as a backup.

Recycling: all materials like plastic, glass, paper , organic trash, are separately recycled.
